Process and Applications
To create the composition seen on the poster I used Photoshop to remove, clean up or add effects to my raster images so I could bring them into Illustrator. From there I organized all my elements and added typography and some small but necessary vector graphics.
The composition of retro stickers used originally in the poster was a very strong representation for this festival. Therefore I continued to rearrange it to use it in different ways throughout this project. It gives the project a strong sense of consistency while managing to portray the style that is desired.
Creative Direction & Rationale
The poster contains polaroid's of the rappers with an element of hierarchy based on their popularity and the order they will be performing. The design choice to use polaroid's was to give the poster the nostalgic feel that this whole event is trying to reconnect the audience with. The polaroid's are surrounded by stickers for the same reason as well as to add some flavour in a way that fits this genre. To add more depth, I added a rough overlay to the blue wall background to help give off the rough and rugged feel that rap is often associated with.
The font chosen is Orgovan Brush for the title and artist names and Orgovan Rounded for the details and information. Orgovan is a great fit for this poster because it stands out but still has a bit of a retro-style feel to it. I felt it was important to have a font that stands out because that's what hip-hop/rap is all about.
When creating the merchandise I wanted to keep it consistent and include the same concept used for the poster except rearranged to better fit. Keeping the same theme for the tickets I rearranged the stickers for the tickets and changed the colour of the concert name text.
Throughout the advertising of this festival I kept a consistent blue theme, with the majority of the advertisements being on the same blue wall. As well as that to keep consistency I often incorporated the cork board. The cork board is an essential piece of the advertising because it represents what our festival is all about. It showcases our artists in a nostalgic way; it isn't exactly a neat cork board. It represents the non conforming attitude of rap while at the same time showcasing classic elements from these famous rappers
